WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads Of Great Students)

WHO:      Students and fathers and father-figures of Westview Elementary

WHAT:     WATCH D.O.G.S.®  is the safe schools initiative of the NationalCenter for Fathering (www.fathers.com).  It was created in response to the Jonesboro, AR school shooting in 1998.  Since then, the program has spread to more than 500 schools in over 25 states.

WHY:    Fathers and father-figures are invited to sign up to spend one day this year volunteering, serving as a positive male role model and helping increase a sense of security in the building.  During their WATCH D.O.G.S.® day,
dads will engage in various activities such as welcoming students during arrival, reading to classes, tutoring small groups of students, having fun at recess, or simply sitting down
and connecting with students during lunch. They can share about their careers and experiences . . . the possibilities are endless!

HOW:   Contact the coordinator at watchdogswestview@yahoo.com to sign up for your WatchD.O.G.S. day!

ACTION POINTS for Committed Dads

During back-to-school events, ask the teacher how you can help out, and put field trips, classroom parties, teacher conferences, and PTA meetings on your calendar.

Be proactive about helping with homework this year. Ask to see assignments; be the spelling word quizmaster, science project assistant, and supportive audience for practice speeches.

Ask your child, “What would a successful year look like?” “In which areas do you hope to excel?” “What are some areas that need extra attention?”

Keep your eyes and ears open for signs of worry or stress when your child talks about the new teacher, new friends, new teams, or new subjects. Keep those concerns in mind for the coming months.

Schedule a regular time when you can check in and spend one-on-one time together, like breakfast one Saturday a month.

If your child is away at college or living away from home, write him a short note at least once a month.
